Founded in 1989, DKT International is a Washington, D.C. based charitable organization that implements twelve social marketing programs in eleven countries. With most countries adopting market economies as their engines of development, the future of social marketing is brighter than ever. Over the past three decades, social marketing has made effective use of marketing techniques and private sector networks to deliver family planning and AIDS prevention products to very large numbers of people. Social marketing uses both the commercial networks and informal, private medical networks to bring contraceptives to millions of low-income couples. Social marketing makes products and services affordable to poor populations by subsidizing the price, providing affordable protection for lower income couples from STDs and unwanted pregnancies. In 2005, the DKT program served 11.4 million couples with complete contraceptive protection and averted 6.4 million unwanted pregnancies and 219,000 primary and secondary HIV transmissions.
